Why you should use a dog running belt

A dog running belt (also called a hands-free leash belt) is mainly about control, comfort, and better movement—for both you and your dog.

Instead of holding a leash in your hand, the lead attaches to a belt around your waist, which changes how force is handled and frees up your upper body.

Here’s why people use them:

1. Hands-free running
You can run naturally without gripping a leash the whole time—better arm swing, balance, and less fatigue.

2. Better control through your core
When your dog pulls or changes direction, the force goes through your hips (your strongest, most stable area) instead of your wrist or shoulder. This gives you more control, especially with stronger dogs.

3. Reduced strain and injury risk
No constant tension on your arms or hands means less chance of wrist, elbow, or shoulder strain—common with traditional leads.

4. Improved running rhythm
A good running belt often includes a bungee section that absorbs shock. This smooths out sudden pulls so you’re not constantly jolted mid-stride.

5. Encourages better leash behaviour
Dogs tend to settle into a more consistent pace because your body movement is more stable and predictable than hand-held leash corrections.

6. Multi-purpose use
Great for:

  • running / jogging
  • hiking trails
  • fast-paced walks
  • training for loose-leash running

7. Storage + practicality
Most belts include small pockets for keys, phone, or treats—handy if you’re out solo.
